A blond boy dozed on the couch, his partner's eyes half-closed with lazy pleasure. The phone ringing disturbed only one of them.
"I just couldn't wait!" blurted the caller.
"… Wha' do ya mean…?" the small boy asked, his voice slurred with the after effects of alcohol and sleep and erotic pleasure. "Wh'r you…?"
The caller inhaled sharply. "Is that you, Near?!"
Near shook his head irritably. "I's my house," he grumbled. "Wh' the hell else?" His eyes suddenly widened, shock snapping him out of the lull. "Matt?!"
Matt shuffled is feet, realizing how much trouble he was in. "U-um… wrong number!" he said quickly, and made to hang up.
"Don't you dare!!"
The sharpness of Near's voice caught Matt off guard, and he held onto the phone, though he wanted to drop it.
"How did you get this number?!" Near demanded, still trying to shake off the lethargy of the previous night.
"I don't remember."
"Yes, you do."
"No, I really don't. I get a lot of numbers from a lot of different places."
"Liar."
"Say that to my face."
"I would. Then I would shoot you dead."
"I'd like to see you try."
"I could."
"With what? A toy gun?"
Near tossed his head in a dismissive gesture. "You haven't seen me in years," he snapped. "I've changed."
"I'll bet you have," Matt growled sarcastically.
"You say it like it's a bad thing."
"It is."
"Who are you to say that?!"
"…" Matt paused, considering this. Why could he say that…? Why had he said that?
"Because I knew you back then," he finally said. "I don't know you anymore."
Near started, his pale blue eyes flying wide. "None of your …!!" But it was Matt's business.  They had grown up together, and Near realized it. "None of your f*cking business!!" he finished anyway.
Matt was suddenly overwhelmed with what he had lost. What Near had lost. "What happened? What happened to the young man who played with Leggos and had that impish little smile? Where did that Near go?"
Near spluttered, caught somewhere between fury and a deep, resounding sadness. "That boy is gone. Long gone. He died with L."
"No, he didn't."
"He's gone, and never coming back!"
"Then that's a tragedy."
Near slammed his fist into the table, his eyes moistening. "Damn it leave me the hell alone!!"
Up till now, Matt had been tempted to hate Near. The pale boy was sharing a bed with his true love. But now he realized that this wasn't Near's fault, either. That this had destroyed him even more than Mello or himself, because Near didn't even have anyone he could dream of.
"Is it that painful to talk about?"
"Shut up!!" Near swayed, the agitation blending with the hangover and making him unsteady on his feet. "Just go to hell!!"
Matt closed his eyes, gently massaging his forehead. "Near, what truly happened? The boy I knew wouldn't yell and curse at his old friend."
"Well you aren't talking to the boy you knew!!" snarled Near. The pale boy made a sweeping gesture with one hand, sending a cup of pens and pencils flying into the wall.
The tears were coming now.
He told himself it was shock and trauma.
It wasn't.
It was sadness.
It was regret.
"Near…" Matt leaned involuntarily forward, as though the boy he was talking to was right in front of him. "Talk to me. Please."
"NO!!!" Near yowled desperately. He wanted a drink. Anything to drown his past.
The blond on the couch stirred. At first, he had thought this was only one of Near's screaming, violent fits, but it was stretching on too long.
Plus… he didn't sound like he was talking to himself.
Mello dragged himself up, and stumbled to the bedroom, where the phone was. He peered inside.
Near was clutching the phone, his pale, thin body trembling violently.
He was bent over, his face a mask of pain, and looking like he wanted to throw up.
Concern shot though Mello. He might not love Near like he loved Matt, but he cared for the boy.
"Near…?" he asked quietly.
Near swung to face him.
There were tears in his pale eyes.
"Shut up, bitch!!" he snapped furiously. "Don't you come near me!!"
Matt winced.
Mello recoiled. He had never seen Near so… unhinged.
Ever.
It scared him.
"Near…?" he asked shakily. "Who's on the phone…?"
Instead of answering, Near grabbed a paperweight and chucked it at Mello. The blond dodged expertly, and moved swiftly forward. Near jolted at finding the blond so close, and he let out a little squeak, throwing a phonebook next.
Mello twisted around, seizing Near from behind and holding him tightly to his chest. The smaller boy was powerless, though he struggled and writhed.
Mello began to croon softly. "Calm down, calm down… you'll hurt yourself if you don't stop this… me, too… you don't want to hurt me, do you…? You don't want to hurt yourself, do you…?" He rocked the white-haired boy gently, back and forth, calming him slowly but efficiently.
Matt winced as he listened. Mello sounded so… tender.
He had to be, to deal with that mutinous child.
Still, Matt couldn't help but be jealous.
Near abruptly collapsed into sobs in Mello's arms, and the two of them sunk to the floor.
Mello gently pried the phone out of his fingers.
Matt heard Mello sigh heavily. "Did you really have to do that?"
"Yes."
"No."
"He's having a meltdown!"
"So?"
"So now I have to calm him down!"
"Why bother? He's just a spoiled little kid."
"He's my responsibility!!"
It came out too fast. Mello didn't have time to take it back.
Matt's eyes widened. "Your responsibility?" he asked, distain dripping from his voice.
"I didn't mean-"
"Yes, you did!"
"No!"
"You feel obligated to look after that little brat!"
"Of course I do!" Mello finally cried. "He's so weak, so alone! He can't function alone! What else am I supposed to do, just leave him?!"
"Yes! Come back to me, damn it! L is dead! You don't need to follow him anymore!"
Matt knew he was being selfish.
He knew he was only pushing Mello away.
But he was desperate.
Desperately lonely.
He was weak and alone, too.
Couldn't Mello see that?
"Goodbye, Matt."
"Mello, wait!!"
The dial tone buzzed in Matt's ear.
He banged his head down on the desk.
Mello gently guided Near back into the living room, leading him to the ornate couch and sitting him down, still cradling him.
Near was little more than a child.
How could Matt ask him to leave a child?
A child, who had no idea how to cope with the world?
"Goodbye, Matt," he said softly, and his own tears joined Near's.
And so very, very far away, Matt was crying, too.
Hi again!! Chap 2 of Empty Eternity. I really like this chapter. It tells you more where the plot is going, not just background.
More :iconniachanplz: in this one! I'm honestly torn... some days the boy annoys me, and others I love him to death. I guess today I don't like him so much. Or maybe I do, since I like to torture my characters :iconnearrapefaceplz:
